MYSTERY SCIENCE Ages
6 - 9 and 9+
Enjoy the YPW forensic team!. Learn the science behind
forensics as you and your team attempt to solve a crime
mystery. After collecting evidence from a mock crime
scene students will analyze the forensic evidence and
ultimately present their findings in a trial where they
are the expert witnesses, judge and jury. Also, young
people will create their own mystery!. You will learn
how to identify fingerprints, perform hair and fiber
analyses, study blood spatter patterns, and perform
DNA fingerprinting in an effort to solve the crime.

TECH-MACHINES Ages 3 to 4
There is nothing that little people find more exiting
than the rough, tough world of vehicles, aircraft and
boats! This workshop provides an interactive way for children
to learn about the physical world in which they live by
designing and building vehicles using LEGO construction
models. Young People explore basic mechanics and design
features; learn to discuss, plan, and test ideas; and
strengthen their sorting and classifying skills. |
PULLEYS, LEVERS & GEARS Ages
4 to 6
Young People build fun mechanical models such as seesaws,
rolling vehicles, hand-operated lifts, and merry-go-rounds
using Lego construction models. While playing with models,
they learn how the models operate and learn about the
cause-and-effect of pulleys, levers, gears, and wheels
and axles. |
NUMBER FUN Ages 4 to 5
Young people in this workshop will have plenty of hands-on
fun creating Lego models and learning how the models they
create relate to math. Math concepts such as numbers,
calculation, approximation, patterns and relationships
will be brought to life through discussion, demonstration
and working together to problem-solve. |
|
MATH-MACHINES Ages 6 to 8
Young people solve fun challenges like helping Katie
the Cat get across the river by building a bridge out
of Legos. Math skills such as measuring, sorting, counting,
sequencing, and weighing are used to solve the weekly
challenges. Students gain an understanding of physical
science while developing stronger math abilities.

BLAST OFF - ROCKET SCIENCE - Ages 9+
Designed by a team of scientists at the University of
CA, Berkeley to specifically appeal to girls and boys,
this workshop takes future rocket designers through
all stages of rocket experimentation from planning and
conducting controlled experiments to graphing and interpreting
data to design modification. Young people work in teams
to assess the variables that affect rocket flight. Emphasis
is placed on experimentation, analysis and teamwork.
The
following activities will be done during the workshop/camp:
* Build instruments to measure the altitude of
large or distant objects. These instruments will be
later used to track the altitude of rockets launched.
* Inspect model rocket kits, discover what each
model part does, design experiments.
* Begin model rockets and prepare for launch.
* Launch team rockets and measure altitude.
* Teams report results and discuss possible future
experiments.

MAKE IT MOVE Ages 8+
Learn physics by building models! Construct about 10
to 12 models and then conduct experiments with them
to learn about forces and simple machines. Each model
demonstrated a fundamental idea in mechanical physics.
For example, your young people can build a balance scale
to learn about lever arms, a freight elevator to learn
about pulleys, a bicycle to learn about wheels, a motion
picture machine to learn about centripetal and centrifugal
forces, and a transmission to learn about gears. Each
activity requires students to identify a problem related
to a simple machine and its principles, and then design,
implement, and evaluate a solution.
We'll build any or all of the following using LEGO
like pieces:
Gravitational motor, force meter, catapult, balance
scale, fixed pulley, movable pulley, combination pulley,
bicycle, helicopter launcher, movie machine, waterwheel
crane, dragster, and landsailer.
